The Unknown Sewing Machine focuses on the impact sewing machines had on women’s lives. Inspired by a 1920’s cast-iron sewing machine found in a gutter the project uses text and found objects to create a lasting memorial to overlooked domestic labour.

The Unknown Sewing Machine is at The Bradford Industrial Museum March 2022 - January 2023. While the project is on show I’m collecting names of women participants would like to see remembered here. These names will be embroidered onto textile objects and placed inside the sewing machine in a series of interventions over the course of the next.

This project was one of 13 commissioned by the Bradford Industrial Museum in response to their collection for the ‘Following Threads’ exhibition.

Following Threads

Following Threads features thirteen of Keighley Creative’s resident artists and artisans, responding to the collections housed within Bradford District Museums and Galleries, and the theme of Industry and our Environment. Key to this was Bradford Industrial Museum, which tells the story of the city’s manufacturing heritage through its buildings, collections, and local stories.

This exciting exhibition features work by Peat Blagg, Gabriella Boiangiu, Olivia Brearley, Naseem Darbey, Jane Fielder,  Louise Garrett, Letty McHugh, Bill Parker, Steve Robertson, Anna Scott, Jan Smithies and Ken Woods.
